MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 22, 2008

Following a successful inaugural exhibition in 2007, Gold Coast artist-run initiative tinygold returns this winter for the hugely-anticipated exhibition Tales from the Cold Ghost II, opening on Saturday 23rd August at 19 Karen Avenue, Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast.

tinygold's sophomore exhibition promises to be a must-see event with the introduction of new works by 26 of the most exciting emerging artists to come out of Queensland, including Alice Lang, Wayde Owen, Renata Buziak, Thor Elias Engelstad and Andrea Fisher.

Audiences will get to experience a diverse range of works from mixed media, painting, installation and photo-media to soft sculpture, new media, jewelry and performance for video.

Tales from the Cold Ghost will be held from 23rd August – 6th September, 2008 at a converted warehouse in the industrial district of Karen Avenue [off the Gold Coast Highway at Mermaid Beach]. The venue sets itself apart from traditional white-cubed galleries with its unique mix of nostalgic and modern elements – a draw-card for visitors and artists who crave for a more alternative gallery experience. Having recently undergone major renovations, the space, called 19 Karen, will make its public debut on August 23 to coincide with the Opening Night of Tales from the Cold Ghost. After the show 19 Karen will start operating as a contemporary artspace devoted to emerging artists and community projects.

tinygold Project Directors Mariam Arcilla and Megan Cope sees this new venue as a great opportunity for the arts sector of the Gold Coast. After all, the girls, who are also artists, began the initiative as a positive response towards the lack of exhibition resources for fellow artists. They also felt the need to debunk the misconception of the Gold Coast as a 'cultural desert' by publicly showcasing art produced by early-career artists living in Queensland, and by encouraging participation between the community and artists via artist-run events.

Megan says, "We believe it's important to expand the emerging artist network in Queensland by encouraging interaction between Gold Coast artists and the wider Queensland art community."

Adds Mariam, "By organizing shows at alternative locations on the Gold Coast we are able to highlight the unique iconography of the city and the independent art community that resides here."

The tinygold project has so far been a proven success with last year's event attracting an Opening Night audience of over 800, and a majority of the artworks being sold. Tales from the Cold Ghost promises to wow audiences with an even bigger show this year, with high-standard, cross-medium and unique artworks that would "make Queenslanders proud of the talent sprouting out of our state."

Tales from the Cold Ghost II opens on Saturday 23rd August. Drinks, food and entertainment provided. The exhibition continues until 6th September at 19 Karen contemporary artspace, Mermaid Beach.

tinygold bio:

tinygold is a non profit artist-run initiative that aims to strengthen support networks between Queensland artists and the community. Our goal is to provide Queensland-based emerging artists with exhibition opportunities via alternative spaces. Our projects also encourage important discussions between local artsmakers, artsworkers and the community through the establishment of artist-run events that overcome the lack of space and resource. Each year tinygold organizes 'Tales from the Cold Ghost,' an art event held at an alternate location on the Gold Coast. Staging a multi-arts group show at a non-traditional space – as opposed to a commercial gallery – enables us to provide local artists with a platform to experiment/develop, produce and promote works that appeal to a broader market not normally witnessed inside a white-cubed context.
